Steve Irons MP Federal Member for Swan

Gateway WA and Perth Freight Link

Improving the road network in the electorate of Swan has always been one of my biggest priorities for the area – in fact as a Liberal Candidate in 2007 the first issue I started working on was a local community campaign to upgrade the Great Eastern Highway, which has now been successfully completed.

Alongside the Great Eastern Highway works I have been focusing on securing funding for two further and complementary major road infrastructure projects of immense scale and importance in the electorate of Swan:  Gateway WA and the Perth Freight Link.

Gateway WA is a $1 billion upgrade of 5 major highway interchanges that surround Perth Airport and the Kewdale/Welshpool industrial precinct.  This project has been long in the planning but was put at risk by Labor’s proposal to link any funding for Gateway WA to the mining tax, which was not raising any money.  To secure the future funding of this project I worked to secure a Coalition commitment to complete Gateway WA as a priority without a mining tax and the project is currently being delivered ahead of schedule.  Some of the intersection designs will be the first of their kind in Australia.

The Perth Freight Link is a Coalition Government initiative announced in the 2014-15 budget to connect the Kewdale/Welshpool industrial precinct with the Fremantle Port.  As a small businessman with many links to the Kewdale/Welshpool industrial area I know the importance of a fast and direct link to our Port for our local economy.   In addition to the economic benefits the $925m project, currently in the planning phase, is set to benefit Perth residents by taking an estimated 65,000 vehicles off the surrounding roads each and every day.  The Labor party opposes the Perth Freight Link project but the Coalition is committed to its delivery.

It is unprecedented to have such a road building program being undertaken in one electorate and I will make sure that these dual and complementary projects are delivered for the benefit of our area.
