Victoria Park Motor Vehicle Trading Hub
I have been working to support and protect the famous motor vehicle trading hub in the electorate from a number of threats to its future.
The car sector – which is concentrated in Victoria Park and extends along the Albany Highway into Cannington – has been part of Victoria Park landscape for many years and is an important part of a local diversified economy, employing many people and bringing visitors into the area.
However the sector has come under some pressure recently on two fronts, with the previous Labor Government announcing changes to the Fringe Benefits Tax causing chaos in the car leasing industry; as well as plans by the council to Grandfather the sector out of the area. I have stood up for the Victoria Park motor vehicle trading hub on both of these issues.
The Coalition was clear it did not support Labor’s changes to the FBT and that we would not proceed with them if elected and this provided some hope for businesses; but unfortunately by the time the election came much of the damage had already been done, with redundancies offered in Victoria Park as a result of the chaos.
In some positive news for the Victoria Park industry, the new Coalition Government has signed trade deals with Japan and Korea that will reduce tariffs on Japanese and Korean cars and hopefully stimulate activity for the many Japanese and Korean car dealerships in Victoria Park.
I will continue to stand up for the Victoria Park Motor Vehicle Trading hub which I believe is an important part of the future of our local economy.
