South Perth wins funding from the National Stronger Regions Fund

October 6 2016

Stage One of the Connect South project in the electorate of Swan will become a reality after winning funding in Round 3 of the Federal Coalition Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund.

Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash and Federal Member for Swan Steve Irons said the local projects funded under NSRF Round 3 made a huge difference in their communities.

“I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and quality local infrastructure is a big part of that,” Minister Nash said.

“Whether it’s cultural and healthcare facilities, tourism infrastructure or a great sports precinct, I’m proud to be delivering to Swan.

“Some 479 applications were lodged under Round 3 – only the very best were successful.”

Mr Irons said the project in Swan had been approved to receive $2.5 million under round three.

“This is a great result for Swan, considering this was such a hotly contested funding round,” Mr Irons said.

Mr Irons has spent several years meeting with stakeholders and has continued to campaign for funds to revitalise the Mends Street precinct.

“The Connect South project would deliver an enhanced and invigorated Mends Street precinct. Visitors would have access to services, recreation and tourism facilities.”

City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty said the project would create a positive environment, both economically and socially to support the growth of the South Perth Peninsula and greater region.
“The project is focused on improved access to transport, improved public amenity and greater economic opportunity,” Mayor Doherty said.

A full list of successful round three National Stronger Regions Fund projects will be available on the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development website on Friday, 7 October.
