Steve Irons MP Federal Member for Swan

Swan Social Services Forum presents opportunity for open dialogue

17 July 2015

Swan Social Services Forum (2) The Abbott government is committed to ensuring the sustainability of Australia’s welfare system while ensuring those most in need gain support, as highlighted during the Swan Social Services Forum co-hosted by Federal Member for Swan Steve Irons and the Minister for Social Services the Hon. Scott Morrison at the City of Belmont yesterday.

Mr Irons said with social security payments costing taxpayers $154 billion in the 2015-16 financial year and increasing each year, the government is working to ensure the integrity and sustainability of these payments is maintained.

“The focus of yesterday’s Social Services Forum, which more than 60 stakeholders and community members from across Swan attended, was to ensure locals are aware of the government’s actions while providing attendees with the opportunity to have an open dialogue directly with the Minister,” Mr Irons said.

“The Government has made a number of changes in the Social Services space including pension amendments providing those with low to modest assets further support, a new $3.5 billion child care package to help families gain access to affordable and flexible child care, and social and economic opportunities being provided for people with disabilities.”

Minister Morrison thanked Mr Irons for the opportunity to hear first-hand from Swan stakeholders and community representatives.

“It was great to meet locals and discuss these important issues,” Minister Morrison said. “The federal government supports people most in need of assistance.

“The welfare system is a safety net and like a trampoline we are optimistic we can help people bounce back, getting back into the workforce and becoming self-sufficient.

“The best form of welfare is a job.”
