Manning Road on-ramp campaign

Latest Update:

From 12 January to 12 February 2019, Main roads will be undertaking works to relocate power and light poles, and demolish buildings to prepare for the project.

Light pole relocation works will be underway between Lockhart Street and Ley Street in Como, and demolition works will occur at properties in Canning Parade, Lockhart Street and the corner of Manning Road and Clydesdale Street. We have purchased these properties for road purposes.

Work hours will be between 7am and 5pm. Some lane closures on the westbound lanes of Manning Road are required between 9am and 3pm from Monday to Sunday. This will minimise impacts on traffic and adjacent residents, and ensure the works are completed as quickly as possible.

Construction work is scheduled to begin in mid to late-2019.

Timeline of Events

The Manning Road on-ramp is one of my long-running community campaigns which I began in 2009 after a survey of local residents.

My survey found widespread community support to construct an on-ramp connecting Manning Road to the Kwinana Freeway southbound lanes.

There is no direct connecting road for motorists travelling southbound onto the Kwinana Freeway from Manning Road.  Instead, southbound vehicles must first head north and negotiate a challenging stretch of road doing a loop over the freeway involving merging and lane changing.

This stretch is congested and slow to get through and residential areas in Como are being used as rat runs by drivers trying to avoid the intersection.

The solution is the construction of an on-ramp directly connecting Manning Road with the Kwinana Freeway southbound lanes.  This had been planned since the 1980s but never built.

With the opening of Fiona Stanley hospital, more and more people from the electorate are travelling south on the Kwinana Freeway and there has never been a greater need for this piece of infrastructure.

I took the Prime Minister to the Manning Road on-ramp to put the case for funding.

I have now secured $28 million in funding from the Federal Liberal government to make sure this project goes ahead, with construction due to commence in early 2019 and take approximately one year.

This funding agreement delivers on my 2016 election commitment to secure the funding to construct a Manning Road on-ramp.

As the federal Member for Swan I made sure that the Manning Road Project was included in the Morrison Liberal Government’s $75 billion infrastructure plan to bust congestion across Australia.

I know this has been a key issue for residents along the Manning Road corridor and would like to thank residents for providing strong support to my office, which has allowed me to put this issue forward in Parliament and deliver the funding.

I would also like to acknowledge John McGrath MLA, who put this matter on the State Government’s agenda and secured a funding commitment from the former Barnett Government.
